Allstedt Castle
The first documentary mention of the "Alstediburg" dates back to the late 9th century. For over 250 years, the imperial palace of Allstedt Castle was one of the most important political centres of the Holy Roman Empire.
During the coming centuries, Allstedt Castle underwent repeated architectural changes - including the construction of the castle kitchen, which is one of the largest in Europe. The most extensive change was certainly the conversion into a castle. Traces of Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque and Historicism can be found in Allstedt Castle.
From 1523, Thomas Müntzer was the pastor of the church of St. Johannis in Allstedt. On 13 July 1524, the reformer delivered his famous sermon to Duke Johann the Constant and his son at Allstedt Castle. Around 250 years later, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe came here and stayed at the castle and palace complex several times from 1776 to 1782.
Today, the complex houses, among other things, a museum where guests can discover the varied history of the palatinate, castle and palace in various exhibition areas. A child-friendly presentation of the topics also invites young visitors to go on a discovery tour of Allstedt Castle.
