St. Mary's Church

St. Mary's Church
St. Mary's Church

St. Mary's Church was built around 1350 in early Gothic style and is the second oldest church in the city.
The high choir to the east is closed as a 5/8 choir in a half octagon and is considerably higher than the adjoining nave to the west, whose floor was originally about 1.50 m lower than today.
The church tower, which closes the building on the west side, is square and has an octagonal pointed helmet roof with pinnacles at the four corners.
Since 1858, the Lutheran congregation of the "Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church" (SELK) has celebrated its services here.
The St. Mary's Church has been owned by the city since 2006. It is used by the Armer Kasten e. V. cultural association for exhibitions, readings, concerts and cabaret.
Annually, the Sangerhausen Christmas market is held in and around the St. Mary's Church.
In 2006, the exterior façade and the choir room windows were renovated, the middle windows according to a design by glass artist Günter Grohs (Wernigerode). Since 2014, the church has been home to what is probably the oldest baptismal font in Sangerhausen, made of rough red sandstone from around 1300. Baptisms take place on it again.
From the tower of St. Mary's Church, four new bronze bells have been ringing a four-tone semitone since 31 October 2017. The melancholy, elegiac motif complements and enriches the city's ringing.
