In 1539, the Reformation was introduced in Sangerhausen. After that, there was no longer a Catholic parish. It was only in the course of industrialisation in the second half of the 19th century that the lack of a Catholic church became noticeable due to an influx of workers in Sangerhausen.
The newly formed Catholic congregation rented part of the Marienkirche and celebrated their services here. In 1894, the Church of the Sacred Heart in Mogkstraße, built in the neo-Gothic style, was consecrated after only one year of construction. In 2008, the exterior façade and the interior were thoroughly renovated.
With a festive service on 2 May 2010, the celebrations for the elevation of the parish of St. Jutta could be celebrated.
St. Jutta was born in 1220. After a pious childhood, she was married to a nobleman of Sangerhausen and spent a short but happy time here as wife and mother. She became a widow after five years of marriage. After providing for her children, she distributed her wealth and gave herself entirely to the service of the poor and the care of lepers.
