Bad Frankenhausen
The town of Bad Frankenhausen is one of the spa towns in the Südharz Kyffhäuser region and is situated on the southern slope of the Kyffhäuser Mountains. In addition to the health benefits of the healing brine, the brine spa also offers a number of cultural highlights. On the northern edge of the town, for example, the Panorama Museum is located in a striking round building on the Schlachtberg. But the Leaning Tower, the Regional Museum and the Hausmann Tower are also worth a visit. In addition, the Lilac Festival in May is becoming increasingly popular, as is the Farmers' Market in September.
The leaning tower of Bad Frankenhausen
It almost looks as if it is about to fall over, and yet the Leaning Tower has been holding itself "upright" for centuries. The leaning of the tower of the Oberkirche in Bad Frankenhausen, one of the oldest buildings in the spa town, has been documented since 1640. Today, the spire of the Gothic church rises a full 4.60 metres off plumb, making it even half a metre more crooked than the Tower of Pisa. A few years ago, the preservation of the world's most crooked tower was actually on the line. It was only thanks to a grant and numerous donations that the town of Bad Frankenhausen managed to save the church tower. Now guests can continue to experience the landmark of the Oberkirche, which is visible from afar, and learn about the unique history of this curious structure in the visitor pavilion.
